Our Celebrity Judges

The final evaluation of the videos is being left to these three Celebrity Judges. They will be looking to make sure that the1st, 2nd, and 3rd place films show outstanding development of a message, creativity and a quality presentation. The Viewers' Choice award will be decided by online polling following the submission deadline of April 21st.

dan saftig

DAN SAFTIG, President of the Iowa State University Foundation

Dan Saftig serves as president of the Iowa State University Foundation -- an organization that generated more than $100 million in gifts and commitments in the 2007 fiscal year. Dan leads a staff of 95, engages a network of more than 200 volunteers, and oversees an endowment approaching $450 million. In October 2007, the ISU Foundation launched the $800 million “Campaign Iowa State,” the largest comprehensive campaign in the university's history.

Dan’s 25-plus years in the fundraising business also includes seven at Penn State University where he led the annual giving, regional major gift, and prospect research programs. Dan began his career as sports information director at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse where he earned his bachelor's degree. He also holds a master's degree in nonprofit management from the University of San Francisco.

MICHAEL BUGEJA, Director of Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication

Michael Bugeja directs the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University. His recent Oxford Univ. Press books include Living Ethics Across Media Platforms (2008) and Interpersonal Divide: the Search for Community in a Technological Age (2005), which won the Clifford G. Christians Award for Research in Media Ethics. His comments on ethics and technology have been cited in The New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor and USA Today.

Bugeja, former state editor for United Press International, has been an advocate for press freedoms, establishing a partnership with Lee Enterprises, which funds an annual First Amendment Day at ISU.

Bugeja also served as an assistant to the president and a professor in the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. He has an M.S. in mass communications from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in English from Oklahoma State University.

DANIEL FISCHER, President-elect Government of the Student Body

Daniel Fischer is a junior in Agricultural Business and Economics from a farm near Neola, Iowa. He is the President-elect of the Government of the Student Body at Iowa State.

At his time at Iowa State, he has been involved with FarmHouse Fraternity, Homecoming Central as part of the Student Alumni Leadership Council, the Iowa State Foundation, and the Memorial Union Board of Directors. Daniel has worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Economics, and is a member of Cardinal Key, Order of Omega, and Alpha Zeta Honor Societies.

In his free time, Daniel enjoys following Iowa State athletics, meeting new people, and exercising. After graduation, Daniel plans to attend law school and eventually be a lawyer and farmer, and maybe someday a politician.
